An impressive African Elephant handcrafted from a gorgeous piece of BC Jade. This is a beautiful carving. Elephants have a universal presence in global culture. They have been represented in art since Palaeolithic times. Sourced from British Colombia in Canada, this carving is from Deane Moreton's personal collection.
Elephants are the largest living land animals. Distinctive features of elephants include a long proboscis called a trunk, tusks, large ear flaps, pillar-like legs, and tough but sensitive grey skin. The trunk is prehensile, bringing food and water to the mouth and grasping objects. Tusks, which are derived from the incisor teeth, serve both as weapons and as tools for moving objects and digging. The large ear flaps assist in maintaining a constant body temperature as well as in communication. African elephants have larger ears and concave backs.
British Columbian Jade. Nephrite jade is comprised of silicate of calcium and magnesium. It is found in Russia, New Zealand and B.C., Canada. Large deposits found in British Columbia have made it the Jade capital of the world, and it was named the Provincial Gemstone in 1969. Nephrite jade ranges in colour from white (often called Champaign or Mutton Fat Jade) through various shades of green, and on occasion even black. Typically, nephrite jade is a medium to deep green colour. The rough stone is mined primarily in the north-western region of the province near Dease Lake.
