Product Details

An incredible blade of a Patu carved from a gorgeous piece of Raukaraka Pounamu. a simple and wonderful carving.

The Mere or Patu is a type of short, broad-bladed weapon in the shape of an enlarged tear drop. It was used to strike/jab an opponent in the body or the head. The Mere signifies high status and gives the owner courage and strength. It is the same design as a Patu, but the difference is Patu's are made of wood, stone, or whale bone whereas Mere's are made of Greenstone Pounamu

Genuine West Coast Greenstone - Raukaraka from the Taramakau River Area. This is the term used by the Māori of the Cook Strait region of the Kawakawa variety that is streaked with a shade of olive green and has yellow and orange hues that blend into the greens. This stone shares its name with the New Zealand native Karaka tree.
