Product Details

A magnificent Hei Matau (Hook) handcrafted from an absolutely stunning piece of Kahurangi Pounamu and presented on a gorgeous water worn Inanga stone. The incredible bright colour of the Kahurangi stone along with the starburst of white create an incredibly beautiful master piece. An exceptional taonga to last several lifetimes.

Hei Matau (Fishhook) - Originally Māori have been fishermen. Their main food source was the sea, so a fishhook of high quality was an unbelievably valuable item to own. The hook became a symbol of prosperity, abundance, good health, power, authority and respect for the sea and its life in it. They also provide good luck and safety while travelling across water.

Hei Matau - Genuine West Coast Kahurangi Greenstone from the Marsden, West Coast area. Kahurangi is the rarest variety of pounamu. It is highly translucent and often comes in vivid shades of green. Small markings can sometimes be seen in the stone – although in order to be classed as Kahurangi, this effect must not reduce the stone’s clarity. The word Kahurangi also indicates nobility and refers to precious jewels and held in high esteem by Māori .

Stone - Genuine West Coast Inanga Greenstone from the Arahura River area, West Coast. A grey-green colour. It is either very translucent or quite opaque. Highly prized by the Māori and the desired material for making Mere and Patu.
