A fabulous and exquisite Mere handcrafted from an amazing and rare piece of Inanga Greenstone. This stone has the honour of streaks of Totweka greenstone running alongside the edge. This is an incredibly special carving and a wonderful heirloom for generations to come.
The mere is a type of short, broad-bladed weapon in the shape of an enlarged tear drop. It was used to strike/jab an opponent in the body or the head, usually made from greenstone. The Mere signifies high status and gives the owner courage and strength.
This a Genuine West Coast Inanga Greenstone from the Arahura River area, West Coast. A grey-green colour. It is either very translucent or quite opaque. Highly prized by the Maori and the desired material for making Mere and Patu.
