Product Details

A fantastic Taiaha Arero and Upoko handcrafted from an incredible piece of Kawakawa Flower Pounamu and Rimu with Weka feathers (ethically sourced), the Arero forms the part of the Taiaha used for stabbing an opponent or parrying, hand carved here in Otautahi (Christchurch).

Taiaha is a traditional weapon of the Māori of New Zealand; a close-quarters staff weapon made from either wood or whalebone, and used for short, sharp strikes or stabbing thrusts with efficient footwork on the part of the wielder. are usually between 5 and 6 feet (1.5 and 1.8 m) in length and often have a pounamu greenstone-tipped blade at one end. It has three main parts; the arero (tongue), used for stabbing the opponent and parrying; the upoko (head), base from which the tongue protrudes with a face on each side. The eyes of the two faces see all around, reflecting the alertness of the taiaha exponent. The upoko is adorned with a Tauri (collar) of feathers and/or dog hair, the tassels of which form the awe. Below this, the tinana (body) provides the grip. The other end of the taiaha has a flat smooth blade, or rau, usually about five to seven centimetres wide, which is the main striking blade. The Taiaha is a symbol of valour and strength.

Kawakawa- is the most common variety of Pounamu. it comes in many shades - from strong, rich green to dark green - and often has small dark flecks, which add to its character. Named after the leaf of the Kawakawa. It is the main type used in gem purposes.

Putiputi (Flower) Jade- is New Zealand’s most prized Greenstone, with pale green or ochre clouds of colour. This distinctive patterning and colouring come from the outside rim or 'rind' of the greenstone boulders or stones where the surface has oxidised.

Rimu is a dense native timber of NZ. It is deep reddish brown in colour and is strong and durable. A stunning timber - one of the most beautiful in the world with a fine textured grain.

Weka- also known as the Māori hen or woodhen is a flightless bird species of the rail family. It is endemic to New Zealand. Some authorities consider it as the only extant member of the genus Gallirallus. Four subspecies are recognized but only two are supported by genetic evidence.
