A truly unique piece! A magnificent handcrafted Tiki . Carved from Totoweka Pounamu body, with Paua inlay eyes highlighting the attention to detail that makes this carver stand out. This carving is a very special taonga that will be passed through many generations and treasured by those who have the honour of being its caretaker. Presented on a brass stand, mounted onto a piece of Rimu wood.
Genuine West Coast Greenstone - Totoweka. This stone is usually like the mid green Kawakawa variety but differs in that the spotting or streaks are red like blood. It is rare to find Totoweka in the Westland jade fields, but when a piece is discovered, it is highly cherished and sometimes becomes the show piece of the fossicker’s collection. Large deposits of Totoweka occur in the South Westland area. The name comes from toto (blood), weka (Native bush hen) or weka blood. The red iron oxide inclusions were likened to the colour of blood of the Weka.
Paua Mother of pearl – The iridescent inside lining of the Paua shell, found in abalone (paua). It is strong, resilient, and very iridescent. This multicoloured iridescence is caused by the way the light reflects on the layers of the shell.
