Product Details

A stunning contemporary Manu (Bird) handcrafted from a delightful piece of Raukaraka. A stunning piece in size and finishing. The details are phenomenal with fabulous black Pakohe (Argillite) sliders which finish this and will make a wonderful taonga.

Manu(Birds) had a vital place in traditional Māori life, providing food, and feathers for adornment and cloaks. Their habits were closely observed and were a rich source of metaphor and poetry. Birds' behaviour was used to predict the weather, and sometimes the future.

Tāne-mahuta (Tāne Mahuta) is the god of the forest and all that lives within it, especially the birds. He is very important in Māori mythology. He is also known as Tāne, Tāne-nui-a-Rangi and many other names.

Raukaraka- Genuine West Coast Greenstone from the Taramakau River Area. This is the term used by the Māori of the Cook Strait region of the Kawakawa variety that is streaked with a shade of olive green and has yellow and orange hues that blend into the greens. This stone shares its name with the New Zealand native Karaka tree.
